Nuša Lapajne: Coordinates

by

World of Art | 20th Generation | Series of exhibitions in public space

2 September – 3 November 2025
TAM-TAM Street Gallery on Vegova ulica in Ljubljana
Opening: Tuesday, 2 September, 5 pm

In her series of paintings Coordinates (2011–), Nuša Lapajne takes the coastal landscape as her theme. She does not approach the actual landscape, which is the source of inspiration to her, through a mimetic approach, but avoids the representative logic of the gaze. The manner of articulation suggests that the depiction relates more to the artist’s introspection than to the appearance of the coastal landscape. The use of strong colours and expressive lines that stand out against the black-and-white background creates emotionally powerful images reminiscent of the legacy of abstract expressionism. Each of the three paintings is accompanied by the GPS coordinates of the exact locations on the island of Unije: 44°38´09, 80˝N 14°14´58,48˝E, 44°38´09,80˝N 14°14´58,48˝E. The artist connects the subjective experience with the actual, physical space. This transformation between the space of the imaginary and the physical, through its placement in an urban public setting, provides an opportunity to reflect on the complex role of the medium in shaping our understanding of images and reality as we see it.

Nuša Lapajne (1970) received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, University of Ljubljana. Her practice encompasses painting, drawing, assemblage and spatial installations, with a particular focus on exploring colour fragments of abstract ceramic elements. She is a member of the Slovenian Association of Fine Arts Societies. Her work has been exhibited in Slovenia, Germany, Italy, Egypt, Croatia, and Japan, including at the U3 Triennial of Contemporary Slovenian Art (1997). She is the recipient of a number of awards, most recently in 2024 in South Korea.
